Beach serenity in Lombok

Lombok, an island in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province, is known for its stunning natural landscapes that range from pristine beaches to the rugged, majestic Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.  I had heard that the island offers a quieter and more authentic alternative to its bustling neighbor, Bali.  Since I was scheduled to go to Bali later in December, I was excited to learn that the MS Westerdam was also making at stop in Lombok.

Our ship docked in Lembar, a picturesque little port town with a view of the Lombok Strait and a backdrop of lush, rolling hills contrasted with the vibrant, blue waters of the sea.  The major highlights in Lombok are its natural beauty – either hiking Mount Rinjani, or visiting their spectacular beaches.  The best beaches were the stunning white sand ones on the Gili Islands, so those were my first choice.  There are three Gili Islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air – just off the northwest coast of Lombok, and they are known for their top-notch snorkeling and diving opportunities.  But getting there would take at least 105 minutes in a car and a ferry, and it wouldn’t include waiting time.  I decided instead to see if there were alternative beaches I could visit nearby.

As I walked out into the terminal, there were lots of tour vendors offering me all kinds of options.  But what got my attention was the Day Pass cruise package offered by the Sundancer Resort.  For about USD $12, and the cost of a taxi, I could spend the day at their resort enjoying Sekotong Beach and their swimming pool.  The price included lunch and a beverage, and free wifi Internet for the day.  I couldn’t pass it up!  And apparently neither could several other people from the ship!  A thirty minute drive later, I was on a lounger under an umbrella enjoying a cold beverage.  The same car that dropped me off at the resort returned several hours later to pick me up and take me back to the port.  All in all, a day well spent!

I did manage to get up … once or twice!

The resort’s pool was a little busier, but not by much
